Intro to Task Types
Overview
Task Types help you organize tasks based on your business processes. They allow you to define separate workflows and custom fields for different types of work, such as bugs, SEO, design, or support tasks.
Every task in 5day.io must belong to a Task Type.
A Task Type controls:
- The status workflow the task follows
- The custom fields visible inside the task
This ensures that each task follows the correct process and captures the right information.
Why is Task Type Important?
Different teams work differently.
A bug task does not follow the same process as a marketing task.
A design task does not require the same information as a support task.
Task Types allow you to:
- Define department-specific workflows
- Capture relevant structured information
- Avoid unnecessary statuses
- Maintain clean and organized processes
- Align 5day.io with your business operations
Instead of forcing all tasks to follow one common structure, you can create structured processes for each type of work.
How Task Type Works
Task Type controls two key areas:
1️⃣ Status Workflow
Each Task Type can have its own status workflow.
For example:
Bug Task Type – Status Workflow
- Reported
- Fixing
- Testing
- Resolved
SEO Task Type – Status Workflow
- Keyword Research
- Optimization
- Published
At the Project level, you can choose how workflows behave:
- By Task Type → Each task follows its own Task Type workflow
- Common for All Tasks → All tasks follow one shared project workflow
If “By Task Type” is selected:
- Bug tasks follow Bug workflow
- SEO tasks follow SEO workflow
If “Common for All Tasks” is selected:
- All tasks follow the same workflow in that project
2️⃣ Custom Fields
Custom fields allow you to capture structured information specific to a Task Type.
For example:
Bug Task Type
- Bug Title
- Severity
- Environment
- Steps to Reproduce
SEO Task Type
- Target Keyword
- SEO Tool Used
These fields appear only when that Task Type is selected.
Custom Field Scope (Important)
Custom fields can be added at two levels:
Workspace Level
If a custom field is added under
Workspace → Customization → Task Type
- The custom field will be available wherever that Task Type is used across the workspace.
Project Level
If a custom field is added under
Project Settings → Customization → Task Type
- The custom field will apply only within that specific project.
This allows you to maintain:
- Global standard fields at workspace level
- Project-specific fields when required
Key Features of Task Type
- Create multiple Task Types per workspace
- Assign separate workflow to each Task Type
- Add custom fields specific to each Task Type
- Set one default Task Type per workspace
